Coming out of stars, media coverage, liberalization of speech around different sexual practices , pansexuality has today become a real phenomenon relegating bisexuality which was in the spotlight a few years ago. What does this term pansexuality cover ? What do those who claim it express? Back on a trend much more subtle than it seems.

Being pansexual: what is it?

The term pansexuality was coined from the prefix “pan” which means “everything” in Greek. It does not therefore refer to the god Pan, with unbridled sexuality. The term pansexuality was used at one time by Freud and his followers to encompass the idea that everything is sexuality. The term has another meaning today: a pansexual is a person who can therefore be attracted to any other human being, regardless of gender notions .

The idea of ”everything” absolutely does not concern fetishist practices and pansexuals do not cross the legal barriers related to age, consent and filiations (incest).

An attraction to trans

Are they then just bisexual? Pansexuals say no. First of all, they may want to have sex and / or romance with trans people. But above all, they emphasize that they are totally detached from the idea of gender. They do not perceive the other according to their sexual identity, male, female or trans, but simply according to their personality . Moreover, this detachment from the notion of gender concerns both biological sexual identity, determined by female or male organs, and social-sexual identity, as for transvestites or androgynes for example.

The refusal of the label

Pansexuals also evoke the desire to get out of the shackles and not to be “labeled”. They reject the “boxes” – heterosexual , homosexual and bisexual – and claim the right to be detached from the distinction of sex.

Finally, pansexuals do not encourage taking sides on a certain number of practices or principles such as group sexuality, married life, the importance of fidelity, etc., left to the appreciation and values of each.

Clearly claiming to be part of the great GLBT family, pansexuals however refuse to be assimilated to them and display their own identity , a freedom to live a sexuality freed from all barriers and all codes.
